Primary Source Lesson Plan Essential Question: What impact did European education of the conquered people have on those native peoples? What can we learn from these events to inform our policies in Afghanistan or Iraq? Objectives:

Make connections between the lives of the natives in LaPaz, Mexico as portrayed in John Steinbeck's novel The Pearl and in Victoria, British Columbia as portrayed in Margaret Craven's novel I heard the Owl Call My Name and the Carlisle Indian School.

Document Analysis: Congressional investigation of Carlisle Indian School This site is the transcript of the hearings investigating problems at the Carlisle Indian School. These problems point out many of the issues related to the conflict between the Natives and the English educators.
THE INDIAN HELPER This is a copy of a weekly newsletter that was created by the Indian boys at Carlisle Indian School. Students will need to be aware that this is written by students but edited by "the man on the bandstand who isn't an Indian."
Since we have already read The Pearl and are at the section in IHTOCMN where the elders are talking about their concerns about the effect of the English education on their young and ultimately on their culture, students will make connections between the document, the cartoon and the novels. Each group will create a mind map using Inspiration software to demonstrate the similarities and differences that they observe.
As individuals, they will reflect on their discoveries and apply to current world events such as Afghanistan and Iraq. They will post their reflections to the Moodle forum and respond to on other student's posting (one not in their small group).
